World Water Day

Tuesday, March 21, 2006

Every day, 6000 children will die from a lack of safe drinking water. What if yours were one...Stop and think about this. Future wars will be fought over access to water. Make this your concern. My life's work is dedicated to this cause. Watch this...

"We plan our cities near water; we bathe in water; we play in water; we work with water. Our economies are built on the strength of water transportation - and the products we buy and sell are all partly water, in one way or another. Our daily lives are built on water, and shaped by it. Without the water that surrounds us - the humidity of the air, the roughness of the river's current, the flow from the kitchen tap - our lives would be impossible. In recent decades, water has fallen in our esteem. No longer an element to be revered and protected, it is a consumer product that we have shamefully neglected. Eighty percent of our bodies are formed of water, and two thirds of the planet's surface is covered by water: water is our culture, our life." (UNESCO, 2006).

    Too many take water for granted in our world. We need to be strategising NOW for our childrens future.

    Madelyn;
    That's right; what will future generations think when they look back on us and our need and greed for oil, when there is insufficieint freshwater for even the developed world?...
    I have not read this book but am going to check it out; thanks!

    Michelle;
    Fortunately, there are those who are, but there is so much more public awareness that is needed and so so much more concern for the developing nations.

    I hope you are well today. xo

    I don't understand how so many people can not even think about this. Then there is the next step from thought to action. You know how I feel. Thanks for continuing to post stuff!

    Hello! we used to exchange comments but then I closed down my blog... have a new one now! Great post. Water is certainly a key issue. I hope that as a civilization we can get population growth under control, I think if we're having serious problems now, just think of what will happen in 30 years when the population hits 9 billion. Yikes!

    Our mechanic at work thinks I exist soley to make his life miserable. I'm always pointing out how the trucks have serious oil leaks.

    the link didn't work for me either, but i will try again later.

    i am orginally from Bolivia, SA even though i grew up here all my life. the first time i went to visit this 3rd world country, i realized how much i took for granted, water being one of them. there only the rich can afford it because its scarce and it has to be sanitized and shipped. we literally took 2 min showers at a time. the washing of clothes was done at the rivers near by. i always try to keep this in mind when i'm brushing my teeth or giving my kids baths....turn the water off, use what is necessary and not more. but i know there is much more we can do as people. thanks for the reminder. :)

    Our populations are increasing, and our water is decreasing. Our water catchments here in Melbourne are once again very low. We have been on water restrictions for a couple of years, now, but I think they should be stricter. It is common to drive down the streets and see people with their sprinklers on, watering the footpaths, wasting water. People just don't think.
    Thanks for bringing this up.
    Take care, Meow

    Impressive, Cathy! I'd love to say that my life's work is dedicated to providing a way for people to get basic needs.

    I am planning to do some volunteer work in Africa to a similar thing this summer... now, you've inspired me to be more pro-active about it.
