Mixed Plate

Thursday, March 23, 2006

When Mr. C and I are having something for dinner that we know for certain that our son will not eat, we sometimes ask him what he would like to have. Lately, his response is "mixed plate". I don't know where this came from, but what he means is a plate of mixed raw vegetables, crackers, and cheese. He will eat any vegetable known to mankind. Loves them. I have no idea how this happened. When I was a child, I wouldn't touch my vegetables. To this day I hate peas. Blech. What don't you like to eat?

    Ummmm. Pizza. Seriously.

    There are other common foods everyone loves which I hate for reasons I don't even know. Your son's mixed plate looks like my usual dinner :D

    Hello Stephanie!
    My favourite people are all blogging right now:)

    Pizza; really?! Even vegan pizza?
    I would't say that I love pizza but I enjoy it every now and then.

    This is your usual dinner, though!? I like to have hot meals at dinner time.

    I don't eat any animals :-)

    I love that mixed plate! Though like you, I prefer hot meals for dinner.

    Missy;
    Admirable to not eat meat; but I am a carnivore...I think my son could be a vegetarian, for no other reason than that is what he enjoys the taste of.

    Meat. I have been a veggie since age 3. People often don't believe me or think I just lie about not eating it.

    Growing up in the south, in Texas of all places, this has been hard. haha

    wow, i wish my kids ate more veggies. i try to get them to eat more veggies all the time, even try to trick them but even that never seems to work. my oldest knew even at 6 months that the green stuff in the jars, she didn't like! lol

    Both my kids love their veggies and my daughter will order a side salad at a fast food joint....go figure!

    I'll eat anything but spinach....just can't do it.

    He asked you for a mixed plate? That's so funny! A mixed plate of vegetables? That's a MIRACLE!
    Hmmm...what don't I like to eat?

    The smell of steamed brussel sprouts or artichokes leaves me gagging. Won't touch those.

    Organ meat. Nope. Not even fois gras...in fact, especially fois gras.

    After a lifetime of not touching mushrooms there are now one or two variteies that I actually like. Not shitakes, though. They're bouncy and weird.

    Sea urchin is seriously nasty.
    But I LOVE peas!

    (but they must be fresh or frozen...no cans...)

    I'm like Connie ... I won't eat fish ... basically, nothing that swims or lives in a shell !! Eeewww, it's not really that i don't like the flavour, I just can't bring myself to eat it. Strange, I know.
    Hope all is well, Cathy.
    I admire your son's liking for all vegies ... I wish my Chicky was like that !!
    Take care, Meow

    I don't do chovies, but I love peas. If I could have peas with every evening meal I would be happy. Strange, I know.

    Brussell Sprouts and baby flying saucers (button squash) icky icky icky!!

  1. Blogger Eric said:

    I love vegetables, and always have! I never understood why people thought broccoli or brussel sprouts were awful.

    But then again, I also eat meat among a bunch of vegetarian bloggers...

    Really, pizza! I don't like most restaurant Italian food either. I mean, there is something for everyone an any menu, but you'd never hear me say - HEY, let's go out for Italian food. Weird, huh? Unless I'm eating with friends, I don't feel strongly about hot meals at dinnertime. As long as I have non-meat protein, fruit & veggies, (a little bit of bread is nice too) I'm a happy camper. My Mom was a self-proclaimed horrible cook - maybe this has something to do with it.

    Oh you have to encourage this great eatting behavior. My (13)youngest Son wont eat any vegetables and only eats fruit once every century!
    My daughter however eats bowls of broccoli!

    I hate liver!

    But I love just about anything that I hated as a child. I'm hoping my son will do the same when he gets to be an adult.

  1. Blogger Tee/Tracy said:

    Oh yum!! That looks so tasty!... My boys have also been good fruit and veggie eaters.

    Things I won't eat - there aren't too many. Walnuts. Asparagus. Peas. Liver.... Some of the usual offenders ;)

    Alysa;
    There are a lot of vegetarians among my blog friends!

    Vani;
    Keep putting them in front of them and don't make a big deal about it; eventually they will come around.

    MomyBlogR;
    I can eat baby spinach in a salad but cooked no way...

    MissB;
    I am with you on the organs; no need for that!

    Connie (s);
    No fish for either of you! But such good sources of Omega-3! Mr.C won't eat fish either :(

    Stephanie;
    Such a British thing; peas...

    Michelle;
    I completely agree with both of your icks...

    Eric;
    That makes two of us carnivores among the vegans.

    Stephanie;
    I actually agree about the Italian food thing; doesn't thrill me either but Mr. C and my son both love it.

    DayByDay;
    That is intresting that one of your children won't touch them but the other loves them; just goes to show that it is nothing to do with you. I hope both of my kids end up to be good eaters.

    Tee;
    That's great that both of your sons are healthy eaters. I hate liver as well and am deathly allergic to walnuts.

    Cathy, that's so wonderful! Maybe he likes the colours in the plates - a mixed plate like that is much more attractive to the eyes. I didn't like vegetables when I was little and I didn't like fish much, until everything changed. When I was 14 I stopped eating meat and I started enjoying vegetables and fish and everything else. It's funny because when I stopped eating meat I started to eat a wider variety of foods.
    But to answer your question...I don't like shellfish very much.

  1. Blogger blackcrag said:

    Hmmm... The question here is what don't I like? I eat everything.

    I won't go buy brussel sprouts, but I eat them if someone (my mother) cooks them.

    I used to hate eggs, but I've grown out of that now.

    I don't like cooked spinach, but I'll eat it raw.

    I will not drink tomato juice, but I love tomates.

    I nearly choked to death on a artichoke leaf once, and haven't touched them since. They used to be a family favourite.

    I guess those are my only food quirks.
